Biscuits and Gravy for my Hubby on Father's Day!

Fathers Day = brunch!

But not at a crowded, over priced restaurant with sub-par service and weak drinks!

We do brunch at home, with Mimosas, Bloody Mary's, and all the breakfast fixins!






Blood Mary's:

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire
  • 1/4 teaspoon A-1 steak sauce
  • hot sauce to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon olive juice
  • horseradish - optional
  • tomato juice
  • Squeeze of lemon and lime - optional
  • salt and pepper to taste
Mix together in a glass with ice - enjoy!

Mimosa:
  • Champagne
  • Orange Juice
Pour equal parts into a glass, enjoy!

Biscuits and gravy:

  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • cooking spray or 1 teaspoon oil/butter
  • 1/2 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1-2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk/heavy cream/half and half
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • optional - 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Vegetarian version:
  • Sub 1 1/2 cups chopped mushrooms and peppers for the sausage
  • add in 1 tablespoon fat - oil or butter - just before adding the flour
  • add in veggie broth in place of the water, or just add veggie bullion when you add in the water/milk


Saute 1/2 a diced onion in cooking spray or a small amount of olive oil or butter in a large pan on medium heat until lightly browned.


Add in 1/2 lb of breakfast sausage - I use 'New York Style'. (For vegetarian, use the chopped mushrooms and green peppers.)

Break the sausage down into small pieces and brown well.


Once browned, drain off some of the excess fat, leaving some for the gravy. Sprinkle in 1-2 tablespoons flour, enough to soak up the reserved fat, and cook, stiring often for about 5 minutes. (For the vegetarian version, you will need to ADD IN more fat at this point, about a tablespoon of oil or butter.)


Reduce the heat to med low and slowly stir in 1 cup of water, then 1 cup of milk or heavy cream. (For teh vegetarian version, you will use veggie broth in place of the water, or just add in veggie bullion/paste when you add the liquid) Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and if you'd like, a little paprika. Bring up to a slow simmer and cook for 10-20 minutes, to your desired consistency.


For the biscuits, I just used the refrigerated ones that you bake yourself... HEY! I can't do it all from scratch!!


Split biscuits in half and top with gravy.


Serve with fried eggs and whatever else you like!

I also tossed together a really simple fruit salad - cantaloupe, apple, grapefruit, banana and grapes - sprinkled with a little lemon juice to prevent it from turning brown.


They boys were in heaven, and hubby was happy too!!
