Mustard Grilled Onion Burgers - an homage to In N Out

When we used to live in California, Nate would eat at In N Out burger about once every two weeks - more if he could get away with it. Once, he told me that he thought they put crack in the burgers, cause its not like they are out of this world, but he CRAVED them!

Needless to say, when we went to Anaheim in February for vacation - we had to eat at In N Out 2 times in 7 days!!

If you know anything about In N Out, you know there is their basic menu and their secret menu. I guess its not really that secret - it's on their website - just not on the menu at the restaurant. You can get grilled onions, animal style, mustard grilled, grilled buns.... and a few others - you just have to ask!!

Nate likes a double double mustard grilled with grilled onions and all the toppings - that means 2 quarter lb patties grilled in mustard, cheese on each patty, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickle and raw onions, mayo mustard and ketchup.

Tonight I made my own version - Mustard grilled Onion Burgers - and I made Nate's about a 1/3 of a lb, a little bigger than a single patty, but big enough that he didn't need to make it a double.

(forgive the blurry picture - I was in a hurry!)

What you will need for 4  1/4 lb patties:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon onion soup mix
  • 2-3 green onions, sliced finely
  • 4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon each yellow mustard and grain mustard
Combine all ingredients, mix well, and divide into quarters.

Form 4 quarter lb patties.

Cook - we grilled them on the BBQ, but you can pan fry or broil if you prefer.

Serve on a toasted bun with you favorite toppings - cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, raw or grilled onion, avocado, grilled mushrooms.... use your imagination! We also had seasoned tots and a simple fruit salad.

The boys LOVED these! I will definitely make them again.
I hope you like them to!!
